RAL Classic vs RAL Design
two systems, one price
RAL is the colour standard widely used in Europe for paints and coatings. We paint to either of its two main systems:
- 01RAL Classic
Four-digit codes such as RAL 9010 (pure white) or RAL 7016 (anthracite grey). The long-established standard in architecture and coatings. Our finder holds 215.
- 02RAL Design System
Seven-digit codes such as RAL 030 40 30: hue (030), lightness (40), chroma (30). Arranged so neighbouring codes sit in even steps, which makes it easy to go a shade lighter or deeper. Our finder holds 1,825.
- 03Which to use
Either. If your project already names a RAL Classic code, use it. For a precise tone Classic doesn't have, RAL Design has far more to choose from. Our Basics are RAL Classic; the other six families are RAL Design.
how a custom colour works

Search any RAL code or name in the Colour Studio (try "7016" or "anthracite") and see every piece in it.
- 02Check it in your light
Screens vary. Ask for a painted sample chip, or send us a paint or fabric reference and we propose the nearest RAL code.
- 03Buy or get a quote
Buy online at the same price as any colour, or add it to a project list for a trade quote.
- 04We confirm
For custom colours we confirm the match by email within 48 hours of your order. If we can't match it, you get a full refund.
- 05We paint it
Painted to a high gloss in Valencia and made to order in 4-6 weeks, then shipped insured.
Specifying
spec sheets in your RAL
Every U· spec sheet can be made in any RAL code, with current prices incl. and ex. IVA: open a piece, choose or search the colour, and download it. For example U·013 in RAL 7016. For a schedule of several pieces, use a project list or the FF&E data on the trade page.
Questions
What is the difference between RAL Classic and RAL Design?
RAL Classic uses four-digit codes (RAL 9010) and is the long-established standard in architecture and coatings. The RAL Design System uses seven-digit codes built from hue, lightness and chroma (RAL 030 40 30), with many more colours in even steps. We paint to both at the same price.
Can you paint any RAL code?
Yes, any RAL Classic or RAL Design System code: 2,040 colours in our finder, plus our 35 curated colours.
Does a custom RAL colour cost more?
No. Every piece is painted to order, so any colour costs the same, with no extra lead time and no minimum: a single piece can be painted in any code.
I have a colour from a paint brand, not a RAL code.
Send us the reference (Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or any other brand) or a photo of the chip. We propose the nearest RAL code and confirm it with you before we paint.
How close will the colour be to my screen?
Screens vary, so treat the preview as a guide. We mix to the RAL reference and confirm custom matches by email within 48 hours of your order. If we can't match it, you get a full refund.
Can the Sand Editions be painted in RAL?
No. The Sand Editions keep the finish of the printed sand. RAL colours are for the U· Collection.
